Frugal Simplicity: The Best Things in Life Are Free

This is a picture that I took earlier this evening.  This is my son's "fierce" baseball face.  He is ready to hit a home run :)

As you can see, he really needs a hair cut.  I will be sharing that as a Money Saving Monday Post this coming week.

My Grocery Shopping This Week

I have been to the store waaaaay too many times this week.  There were just so many great stock up prices that I couldn't pass up.  Hopefully, I won't have to do much grocery shopping for the next couple weeks, except for fresh produce and dairy.  All totaled I paid a total of $44.41 for everything in all the following pictures ($42.41 if you count the $2 in ECBs that I made at CVS with the transaction at the very bottom)

I calculated up that if I had not used any coupons or ad-matched anything, everything would have cost right around $168.00 (I calculate using sale prices- I don't go by the regular store price).  This is a savings of $123.59 or 73.6%.  The first three pictures below are of three Shopping trips that I did at County Market this week (early in the week I also bought 1 package of the store brand saltine crackers for .77 because my husband was sick):
I already broke down the first transaction here, and for time purposes, I am not going to totally break down each of these because I basically used the same coupons for each transaction.  My total for this transaction was:  $3.35 and I got a $1.50 OYNO coupon for the granola.
This transaction was very similar except I bought 9 Yoplait Yogurts and only 1 box of Granola bars.  I also bought 1 old orchard 100% juice (used coupon booklet coupon to bring the price down to .99, then I used a .50/1 Printable coupon)  1 package of Keebler Cookies (I used coupon booklet to get them for $1.59, then I used a $1/1 Previously available printable coupon)  My total for this transaction was:  $2.08
This transaction for the Yoplait and the Nature Valley was the same as the one above.  I then bought 1 pound of Deli ham which I used the current coupon booklet to get it for $3.99.  I also bought a 10 lb. bag of potatoes for $1.99.  My total for this transaction was:  $4.60 (I paid partly with the $1.50 OYNO coupon that I earned in the first transaction.)

I bought these items at Walmart on Wednesday for a total of $9.67.  Here is the breakdown:
  • (7) bottles of liquid coffee-mate priced matched to $1.29 with Kroger.  I then used 7 printable coupons for $1.50/1 (these were each adjusted down to $1.29 by the cashier)= free
  • 1 loaf of whole wheat bread for $1.68
  • 1 container of powdered coffee-mate on clearance for $1.70.  I used another $1.50/1 Printable Coupon as well = .20
  • 10 packages of Kraft Philidelphia Cream cheese price-matched to .99 each with Kroger.  I used (2) $5/5 Printable coupons = free
  • 2 bottles of Kraft dressing price-matched to $1.49 each with Kroger.  I used (2) $1/1 previously available Printable Coupons= .49 each
  • 1 package of Driscol's raspberries price matched to $1 with Kroger
  • 2 boxes of Capri-Sun price matched to $1.38 each with Kroger.  I used a $1/2 manufacturer coupon that I received in a mailer from Kroger= .88 each
  • 1 box of New York breadsticks price-matched to $1.99 with Kroger.  I used a $1/1 coupon that I told you about here= .99
  • 1 container of Progresso bread crumbs price-matched to .99 with My Store.  I used a .50/1 Printable Coupon = .49
  • 1 bottle of Coke priced matched to .79 with Kroger.  I used a $1/1 Printable Coupon that I received from Recycle Bank= .21 overage
  • (1) 3 lb. bag of apples price matched to $1.49 with Aldi
  • 1 container of Prairie Farms cottage cheese price-matched to $1.39 with IGA

This picture is a total of three shopping trips that I made on Friday:  Walgreens, County Market, and Walmart.  The items that I purchased at Walmart cost a total of:  $23.20.  Here's the Breakdown:

  • (5) cans of Swanson Chicken broth on roll-back for .50 per can.  I used 1 .50/5 coupon from the 9-26 S.S. = .40 each
  • 2 packages of Driscol's raspberries on roll-back for $1.38 each
  • (1) 3 lb. bag of Onions priced matched to .96 with My Store.
  • 1 Bunch of Broccoli price-matched to $1 with Meijer
  • 1 cantaloupe price-matched to .96 with My Store.
  • 2 boxes of Old El Paso Taco shells price-matched to $1 each with Meijer.  I used (2) .50/1 previously available printable coupons= .50 each

  • 1 large can of pumpkin puree for $2.50

  • 1 box of Betty crocker Cake mix for .98
  • 1 container of Betty Crocker icing price-matched to $1 with Meijer.  I used a .75 off coupon when you buy cake mix and icing from 10-3 G.M. insert.
  • 2 packages of Reach Floss for .97 each.  I used (2) $1/1 Printable Coupons= .03 overage each.
  • 1 package of Cottonelle wipes for $2.87.  I used the free coupon I told you about here= free (this coupon is still available to request too!)
  • (2) packages of Planter's pistachios for .88 each.  I used (2) $1/1 Previously available printable coupons= .12 overage each.
Walgreens:
  • 2 packages of paper plates for .89 each with in-ad coupon
  • 6 cans of chicken broth for .50 each with in-ad coupon
  • 2 packages of Halls cough drops for $1 each.  I used a $1/2 coupon from the 10-10 S.S.
  • 1 Reeses peanut butter cups for .69 ( I threw this in at the last minute to get my total high enough to use a R.R.)
I paid with a $5 R.R. that I got last week, and paid .74.  I then got back a $1 R.R. for the Halls cough drops.  I couldn't figure out why my total wasn't high enough to use my $5 R.R. without buying the candy-then when I got home I realized that the cashier only scanned one of my packages of paper plates.

County Market:
I bought 9 more Yoplait Yogurts at .50 each
1 more box of Nature Valley Granola Bars at $2.50
I used a .50/8 coupon for the yogurt from the 10-3 G.M. insert
I also used the in-ad store coupon for $6.00 off when you buy 10 items
My total was .50

CVS:  I made a total of $2 in ECBs for buying the above items.
1 package of candy corn for .99
2 boxes of oatmeal for $2.50 each with a $2.00 ECB back when you buy 2
1 Colgate Toothpaste for $2.99 with a $2.99 ECB back
I used .75/1 Printable Coupon for the toothpaste
CVS Price scanner coupon for .99 off the candy corn
I also used (2) $2/1 Previously available Printable Coupons
I also got my green bag tag scanned for .25 ECB
After coupons I paid:  $3.24 and received back $2.99 ECBs for the toothpaste, $2 ECBs for the oatmeal, and .25 ECBs for the green bag tag (I actually got back $1 ECB because it was my 4th green bag tag scan) = total ECB profit of $2

My Freezer Cooking Plans

This weekend I am hoping to get the following freezer cooking done:

  • Corn Bread mix-x4 I am going to decrease the quantity of sugar called for (I am going to just combine the dry ingredients together in plastic bags)
  • Biscuit mix x 4 (same plan as above) I am going to try a mix between this and this recipe.
  • Pancake mix x 4 (same plan again)
  • Pumpkin Chocolate chip muffins x 2
  • Chicken Burritos x 10
  • Chicken Pot Pie x 3
  • Chicken and Noodles x 2
  • Get all the free yogurt I have been stocking up on put into plastic bags and into the freezer to throw into Smoothies.  I am planning on putting about 1 1/2 yogurt cups into each bag and I think that when they are frozen, I should be able to just turn the bag inside out and the yogurt should come out pretty easily to put into the blender.
  • Taco seasoning x 5
  • Apples sliced up and mixed with apple pie seasonings and placed into plastic bags for easy apple pies.
  • And Possibly make some fresh salsa out of the last meager remains of my garden:

I also used:  1 coupon for .75/2 any Nature Valley Granola bars, 1 for .50 on any Nature Valley trail mix bar, and 1 coupon for .40/6 Yoplait yogurt-  all from the 10-3 G.M. insert.  You can find other Printable coupons for these here(I would have really made out like a bandit if they had the Nature Valley Granola Thins in stock- there are .75/1 Printable coupons and a .75/1 coupon in the 10-3 G.M.).
I paid $3.35 and received a $1.50 oyno checkout coupon for buying 3 boxes of the Nature Valley
So a net total of only $1.85!  (You can go here to see more able this current Catalina Deal on the Nature Valley)

You can get an even better deal on some items though if you don't want the Nature Valley bars.  Here's one scenario:
Buy 2 bags of the Chex Mix or Bugles on sale for $1.50 each
Buy 8 Yoplait Light Fat Free or Thick & Creamy Yogurts for .50 each
    Subtotal:  $7.00
Use $6 off in-ad store coupon
Use (1) .50/1 Printable Coupon for the Chex or Bugles
    Use (1) .40/6 Yoplait Printable
    Final Price:  $0.10!

You could use (2) .50/1 Printables for the Chex or Bugles, but I would be afraid that it would alarm the cashier if your total goes negative.

There are tons of different ways that you could do this deal with the Yoplait to get other things for free as well.  Such as one box of Granola Bars and 9 yogurts  Use .50/1 Nature Valley Printable and .40/6 Yoplait Printable and get everthing for only .10 after the $6 off in-ad store coupon.  You can find all the participating items here in my current County Market Match-ups along with the coupons you can use with them to score big time(I also have more details on this post about the Catalina Promotion for the Nature Valley there)!

FYI:  If you are in the Mattoon, IL area, my County Market was fully stocked with the Yoplait, but if word about this spreads, you can be sure the shelves will be cleared, so don't wait on this deal if you want it!

*I am going to get more yogurt for free and put the yogurt in plastic baggies and put it in the freezer to throw into smoothies!

Let me know what great deals you score!

How To Save Money With Amazon

Amazon.com is definitely one of my favorite stores of all time.  They have pretty much anything that you could ever imagine, and often their prices are better than what you could get anywhere else.  Now, I am all about supporting your community and buying local, but right now, with the season of life that my family is at, we need to try to stretch our dollars as far as they can go, and shopping local is not always the best choice for that.  I hope that someday we will be financially comfortable enough (Ha! We'll see if that ever happens lol) that we can always buy local, but right now shopping through Amazon saves me a lot of money.  Here are some ways to save money with Amazon:

    • Amazon does not charge tax for most states- I recently bought a new laptop and I think that not paying any tax saved me between $70-$90 depending on where I could have bought it locally. (the larger cities in our area have higher tax rates than the town I live in).  I really wish that when you purchase something, that the shelf price would include tax.  It is easy to forget how much extra tax will add when you purchase something- it can significantly increase the total price you are paying.
    • Since I use Swag Bucks, I earn Amazon Gift Cards every month which I can apply toward my total.
    • There are two ways that you can get a free subscription to Amazon Prime.  I have the free one year subscription for being a student.  This allows you to never have to pay shipping fees- no matter what your order total is.  You also get your items shipped to your house in two days with no charge to you.
    • Amazon has Gold Box Deals.  After you are signed into your account click on the gold-colored chest icon at the top of the page.  There you will find several special deals that are personalized for you, as well as the current lightning deal, and gold box deal of the day.  You are supposed to purchase a personalized gold box deal within 1 hour of viewing it, but I have found that they are usually available all day to you.  Your personalized deals will change everyday and they are actually an extra discount on the item (usually around an extra 5% off) just for you to purchase.
    • Amazon's prices change periodically.  Sometimes this can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing if the item you wish to purchase increases in price.  When I have my eye on something that I may be interested in purchasing, or something that I know I will end up having to buy sooner or later (such as ink for my printer), I add the item to my cart.  You can put it in as save for later if you would like, so it isn't in your cart ready for purchase.  Then, when I go to Amazon and click on the button to view my cart it will stat right at the top of the page any price differences -up or down- for my items from the last time I looked at my cart.  This is very helpful for me because if I added printer ink to my cart and see that the price dropped $5, I know that I should probably go ahead and purchase it then because chances are the price will raise back up soon.
    • You can buy books and other items from private sellers on Amazon.  This can really save you a lot of money if you really want to own a book, instead of checking it out at your library.  Search for the item you are interested in and click on the link on the right side of the page that says More Buying Choices.  You can often find books for as low as $0.01 each.  You will have to pay $4 in shipping for each of these books, but this can be a huge savings if the list price of the book is $10-$15.  Make sure you note what the seller of that items says in the comments, and what the condition of the item is listed as.  Sometimes it may not matter to you if the cover has a tear or has a little writing inside and sometimes it will.
    • If you are in the market to purchase books through Amazon, consider checking other editions of that item.  When you go to a specific items page, it may have a box below the price with other formats.  You can click to see more formats and possibly find an older edition of that item for a much lower price.  For example:  I recently decided that I wanted to buy one of my Nutrition textbooks to have as a resource at home.  The current edition of this book costs:  $154.00!  Even used items for this specific textbook start out at $122.00.  I checked on other editions of the book and got one that was 3 years older shipped to my home for only $8.00!  When I got the book, I thoroughly looked through it and I believe almost the only difference is that the pictures have been updated with more modern-looking people in the illustrations.
    • Many books and Home and Garden items are eligible for a 4-for-3 promotion through Amazon.  If you buy 4 of these eligible items, you will receive the lowest priced item totally free of charge.  This discount will be reflected at checkout.
    • When you look at a specific item's page, always check to see if it says Special Offers Available right by the price.  If it does, scroll down and view what the special offers are.  Sometimes this may be the 4-for-3 promotion, and sometimes it may be a variety of other promotions that could end up saving you more money.
    • Sometimes Amazon offers an additional discount on items if you sign up for their subscribe and save program for that item.  This works for many items in their grocery department, and for items like diapers and wipes.  You will see this option right under where you would click to add the item to your cart.  If you choose this option to save the additional 15-30% off your order, you do not have any obligation to actually continue to have it sent to you.  To cancel a Subscription like this you go to your account- then click on the Manage Subscribe & Save Items under the Orders section.  Once there, click to cancel your subscription.

    Freezer Cooking

I was first introduced to Once A Month Cooking (OAMC) several months ago and have come to really love it.  Freezer cooking can save you time, energy, money, and help you to eat healthier.  I don't know how many times having a home cooked meal in the freezer, and ready to pop into the oven has saved us from going out for fast food on a busy evening.

Freezer cooking doesn't just have to be for people in larger families- I believe it would actually work well for single people as well.  So many recipes make a number of servings, and a single person could divide those meals up into single servings and freeze them, which would cut down on food waste.  The awesome FishMama over at Life As Mom is going to be hosting a freezer cooking day this weekend if you feel like you would like to get started!  I am hoping to be able to participate this time.  I will try to keep you posted as to what recipes I am planning to make.  If you are new to freezer cooking, you can check out some of these posts by FishMama:

Hot Deal On Celestial Seasonings Tea At Mattoon Walmart

When I was at the Mattoon, IL Walmart earlier today, I saw lots of different varieties of Celestial Seasonings Tea on clearance for only $1.12 per box.  There was a $1/1 coupon for this tea in the 10-3 Smart Source Insert (I couldn't find this coupon in any of my inserts though).  If you do have this coupon, you can get the boxes of tea for only .12 each!  The tea is a pretty good price at $1.12 each even if you don't have this coupon.  The clearance food at the Mattoon Walmart is in the canned vegetable aisle.

I also saw several different types of hamburger and chicken helper on clearance for .75/ box.  There is a .75/3 Printable Coupon that would make these .50 per box.
